A simple bedtime routine for a restful night

You wouldn't skip brushing your teeth at night, would you? We didn't think so. That's exactly how we should treat our bedtime routine, as a non-negotiable part of our daily rhythm. A good night's sleep doesn't begin when your head hits the pillow; it starts in the hours leading up to it. Just as you prepare children for bed, the same principles apply to adults.

Your routine doesn't need to be complicated or time consuming. The key is to find a few simple steps that work for you. Here’s an example of what our evening routine looks like:

  • Early Dinner: We aim for an early evening meal. This gives our bodies plenty of time to digest our food before we go to sleep.

  • Warm Shower: A warm shower helps the body relax and signals that it’s time to wind down.

  • A Calming Cup of Tea: A cup of herbal tea is a great way to relax. We always choose a blend without caffeine or other stimulants. If you need a touch of sweetness, a little honey would work well.

  • Screen-Free Time: We put away all phones and screens at least 30 minutes before bed. This helps our minds switch off from the day's digital noise.

  • Dim the Lights: Using warm, dim lighting in the evening helps set a calming mood, unlike bright white lights that can signal to your brain that it's still daytime.

  • Stretches & Relaxation: Simple stretches and deep breathing can ease any remaining tension. Ashby also likes to add a Shakti mat to his routine for some deep relaxation.

Creating a consistent sleep routine is a powerful way to prioritise your health and restore your body.
